HECTOR mACMILLAN awARD

In 2019 the SSP created the Hector MacMillan Award for Best New Scottish Play, dubbed the Hector.

Three Hectors have thus far been awarded to leading Scottish playwrights, the most recent to Rona Munro for James IV:Queen of the Fight.

In 2019 the SSP created the Hector MacMillan Award for Best New Scottish Play, the 'Hector'. This is an annual award in memory of one of our founding members, past Chair and latterly Honorary Life President who died in 2018. As well as a distinguished playwright himself, Hector was a passionate champion of new writing.

Uniquely, this award for Best New Scottish Play is an accolade from fellow playwrights, as the award is voted for by members.

There have been three Hector awards so far, and nominations for the fourth, for new plays produced during 2023, will be invited in Summer 2024.
